New Quilt

It has been almost a year since I made a quilt. That is pretty surprising to me. I have gone thru a lot of changes lately. I have been busy with school and do not have a lot of space to make my quilts. I was also a little down on quilting. I thought I wanted to change mediums and have tried many different things but I always go back to quilting.

My sister asked me to make this quilt to give it to a friend of hers that lives in San Francisco. It actually made me interested in quilting again. Now I have to find the time. Isn't that always the problem?

Adios Paducah Opening

On May 9th was the opening reception of my first solo exhibit Adios Paducah at Aspire Arts Gallery. I got a haircut and highlights earlier that day and I looked fabulous. Here I am with Janet O'Rourke, one of the owners of the gallery.

People started coming at 6 pm and they kept coming and coming. Almost everyone there I knew. I didn't know I knew so many people.

Most of the night I sat in my throne and said hello to all my adoring fans. My friend Lourdes came from Puerto Rico for the opening. She is the best friend ever.


I wasn't the only one looking fabulous.

Later people started sitting in the porch visiting,

then the music started

and also the dancing.

Oh yeah, there was also some art.




Don't pay attention to the goober blocking the art.

So far I have sold almost half of the show. The show will be up until June 6th. The gallery is at 611 North 6th Street in Paducah. They are open Fridays and Saturdays. I am really happy that everyone came to the opening and I got to see everyone before leaving. It was a great night.

Sneak Peek

Yesterday while Janet and I selected the quilts for my show, this is what my living room looked like. It's pretty amazing how you can see seven years of your life just right there in front of you. All the memories. I can probably tell you where I got every little scrap of fabric in this picture. Every quilt has a story. Every quilt was made for a reason even if at the time I didn't think there was a reason for it. I am making the labels to put next to the quilts in the show. Originally I was thinking of just doing a regular label with just title and price. Now I'm thinking that this is a very personal show and most of the people who will be there know me in some capacity so I think I'll make the labels telling the story of the quilt. Not all the quilts in the picture will be at the show. You are just going to have to come and see for yourself what made the cut.

Where in the world are my quilts?

In Paducah, KY. That is where they are. This week the whole Quilting World centers in Paducah when the town hosts the AQS Quilt Show. It is the second largest quilt show in the country and over 30,000 people come to town. Mostly gray-haired-roundish-quilted-bag-wearing ladies with smiling faces fill our streets with a few bored husbands thrown in.

So where can you see (and hopefully buy, not big hopes there)?

• Pinecone Gallery - 421 North 7th Street - They are having an opening reception tonight (Wednesday) from 6-8 pm.

• Bebe's Artisan Market - 107 Market Square - The quilt in my Adios Paducah postcard is there.

• Market at 315 - 315 Brodway Street

• Heart of Healing Gallery - 233 North 7th Street - Most of my moderately-priced things are there. Including small framed quilts, my flower pincushions, and all my used quilt books that I don't want to take with me.

• Texaco Station - 402 North 7th Street - My quilt of the Texaco Station is there and as a bonus you get to see my smiling face 11 am -4 pm.

• A.I.R. Studio - 621 Madison Street - Two doors down from the Texaco are my latest quilts that you can view from the window. One was quilted by Pam Heavrin and the other by Sally Terri. Also my sculpture is there.

And no, I'm not in the big show. Why, you ask? They had the audacity of rejecting my quilt. I entered the quilt with the dogwoods and they didn't want it. Their loss.

Sold!

There is a group show of Lowertown Artists at the Actors Theater in Louisville, KY. I'm always talking about Bill Renzulli in this blog. That landscape in the picture is his work. I have two quilts on the exhibit and I found out that one of them sold!


I also got contacted to make another one similar to the one that sold. It's a good day. This always happens. I have months and months without a sale and I'm frustrated and I'm ready to quit and then I have a big sale and I think "Well... maybe it is not so bad..."

This is the quilt that sold. It is called Rebirth. Could that be a sign?

Old San Juan

My grandfather is turning 90 next month. They are having a big surprise family reunion in Puerto Rico. I can't go so I'm making a video of what I am doing here to send to him. I also wanted to get him a gift and since it is such an important birthday I couldn't get him a gift certificate or something like that. I decided to make him a quilt. I know I said before that I wasn't going to quilt anymore but then I saw this picture and got inspired.


First I made a pattern in the computer. Since I didn't had a lot of time before I had to mail it, I decided to do a small quilt. It is 20" x 16". Since it has so many details, there were a lot of small pieces. there are pieces in there that are 1/8" wide!

Then I made the quilt. The building in the back I think is La Fortaleza, which is the Governor's Mansion. Just in time for all the chaos that is going on with the governor of Puerto Rico at the moment.

Going once, going twice... Sold!

The quilt I made of the Broadway Methodist Church sold and it will be displayed in the new church addition. Happy Dance!!

Nothing much going on...

Nothing too exciting is happening in Aynex's world at the moment. I did two good things. I entered the AQS Quilt Show in Paducah and I backed up my computer files. I learn from my mistakes sometimes. For the AQS Show I entered a quilt that I don't want to show you because the judging is supposed to be blind and who knows who reads this. Anyway, I'm almost sure it is going to get in because it is a pretty quilt, not too artsy and it has dogwoods and they take anything with dogwoods. Now the judges are going to read my blog and not accept me in the show for saying that.

I was reading Bizzyville's blog and it gave me an idea since I am low on blogworthy material. I hung my latest quilt on the wall across my bed.

That night when I went to bed, I turned off the lights and I had a bright yellow square screaming at me. Since that night I cannot look at the quilt and not see that bright neon yellow jumping out of the quilt. I can do something to tone it down but should I? Tell me what you guys think?
